Since her jewelry begins by drilling holes in sea glass, doing the same with recycled eyeglass lenses was not a huge leap. Sea glass is nature’s way of recycling our trash into beautifully colored and textured gems, so she thinks of herself as a recycling artist. Now, several years later, she sells her jewelry from New England to Key West, from the US Virgin Islands to Canada, from the Midwest to the West Coast. It was here where she was encouraged to start creating something with her sea glass collection. After retiring from 35 years of teaching art for the Marion City Schools, where she taught jewelry, photography, and graphic design at Marion Harding High School, she signed up for a jewelry course at Ohio Wesleyan University with professor Cynthia Cetlin. She has made art with blown glass, leaded glass, slumped glass, and etched glass and has been collecting beach glass for most of her life. The final product will sparkle in the light in the center of the Imagination Space.Ībout the Artist: Being born in the Glass Capital of the World (Toledo, Ohio) may have had something to do with Kris Hyland Kolb’s love of glass.
